Meet the author
I'm Faiz Zuberi, a dad, designer, cofounder of Creamwala Ice Cream, and now an author. Little Bites of Urdu is a deeply personal project that weaves together my love for illustration, language, and food. These are all the pieces that shaped me growing up as a Pakistani-American.
As a designer and illustrator who appreciates craft and beauty, I've often wondered why things related to Urdu didn’t meet my standards (well, besides Coke Studio). Every day, we interact with beautifully designed objects, from the tech we use, our clothing, to the furniture we buy for our homes. So, why should our standards lower when it comes to the representation of our language and heritage?
I wanted to create the best quality book possible, which just happened to celebrate Urdu. From the unique font choices, to the paper quality, and of course all the illustrations I drew by hand. I put the years of design experience I have into this passion project and I didn’t want to take any shortcuts or make any compromises.
Little Bites of Urdu is my ode to our mother tongue. I wanted to make it as approachable as possible by making the words and pronunciations accessible to almost anyone.
This book is a culmination of all my passions: Art, food, and the Urdu language and I hope it can evoke a sense of pride, curiosity, and nostalgia inside of you.
